1) Create Content for your Audience

We know that creating original content is HARD, there's millions of creators on this platform succeeding with their content and it's so difficult to not want to replicate what they're doing. Though thousands of people may see your reels, the important thing to remember is that you should be creating content for your ideal audience. If you're scrolling your feed and see a video that appeals to you, go ahead and save it a collection for later. Use these videos for inspiration but don't copy them word-for-word or dance-move-for-dance move. Create it, make it your own, include your branding and make sure that it's entertaining and educational for your audience!

2) Include Closed Captions

Adding videos to your platforms whether it be through Reels, Stories or a simple post will not only increase your engagement but it also makes your content more accessible. It's estimated that 85% of videos online are watched without sound - so adding closed captions or subtitles to your videos is a MUST!

3) DO NOT use TikTok videos

Instagram has come right out and said "do not post a reel that is visibly recycled from other apps (i.e. contains logos or watermarks)." So they won't be prioritizing these videos, likely because TikTok is their newest competitor. If you want to repurpose your TikTok video, we recommend screen recording your TikTok before posting it then cropping and sharing to Instagram.

4) Use Short and Sweet Captions

Have you watched a Reel lately? The caption shown is barely a sentence long, only 55 characters to be exact, before clicked on. Likely, your eyes are drawn to the video and then you keep scrolling anyways. Another downfall with Reel captions is then when you click "more" the caption appears transparent on top of the Reel that's still playing which makes it very very difficult to read.

5) Utilize Trends

We all remember the Bernie Sanders Memes and how fast they spread like wild fire, right? Well, trends continue to do the same on both Reels and TikTok so it's important to jump on them quick!

6) Share your Reels to your Feed and Story

Before you post your reel, make sure you select "also share to feed" underneath your caption section! This is a great way to increase your views and engagement with your current followers. If you have an aesthetic on your Instagram, create a Reels Cover (with Canva of course!) that blends with the rest of your content.

7) Optimize On-Screen Text Placement

This is EXTREMELY important! Any text you place on your video should be within 4:5 dimensions. If it's not, the text will not appear in your grid and may get cut off.

8) Post Consistently

Instagram favours those that post and use their app more! Posting consistently will get the algorithm to help with your reach and your engagement with your audience. If you don't see a large number of a views the beginning, don't stress! Social media is a lot of trial and error. And think of it this way ... whether it's 3000 views or 30, you're still putting yourself "in a room" and speaking to those 30 people.

9) Use Music from IG's Library

Music on Reels is a must! For one, it's another way to increase your visibility because people can search Reels based on the audio used. The IG music library can be a little tricky for business pages (in Canada) because you can't search popular songs but here's a trick:

Scroll through Reels on your Explore Page and when you hear audio you like, click it and then click "SAVE AUDIO."

You'll later be able to access this when adding audio to your reel through the "SAVED" button at the top of your screen.

10) Include Hashtags

We love hashtags, we will say this every single day and mean it! Including your 30 hashtags is key to getting the algorithm to better understand your content and serve it to relevant audiences. They will also allow for a broader audience to discover your content! Finding the right hashtags is a whole different blog post (coming soon!) but we recommended using location, brand, niche and (post) topic specific hashtags.
